Types of Paint for Your Chicago Home

What type of paint finish should you use on your interior walls?

You have a few choices these days. Several factors apply to what type of paint you want to choose.

Paint Finish Types:
What Paint Finish Should You Choose?
The factors that apply are dependent on the uses of the room.

Flat Paint should be used in areas where the walls have a lot of imperfections. Any sheen can show the bumps and ridges in a wall. Also, flat paint is harder to clean (if at all) than ones with sheen, so it's not good for high-traffic areas.

Eggshell Paint is a good mix between flat and satin. It can be cleaned easier, but doesn't have as much sheen as satin so it can still hide some wall imperfections.

Satin is great for high-traffic areas, such as hallways and kids' rooms. It shows a lot of imperfections but can handle the most dirt and grime.

Semi- and High Gloss is best for kitchens and bathrooms. These paints can stand up to a high water area and repeated cleanings.

im currently looking to redo my family room. what kind of paint/paint color do you recommend for a cozy yet modern feel? i have three children and a dog. thanks!

It depends - a small room with only one or two windows means you want to paint the room a lighter color. A larger room with lots of windows gives you the chance to paint it a darker or cozier color.

And, with kids, in a high traffic area, you want to go with a paint with more of a sheen - eggshell or satin would be best. It's easier to clean
