Painting - DIY or Hire a Painting Contractor?
Here's a tough decision:You've got several room, or the exterior of your house, to paint...
Do you do it yourself? Or pay a painting service to do it for you?
Everyone is convinced they can paint a wall or paint some siding. Painting is not very difficult for a handy person who is able to move around easily and has all the right tools.
The question about whether to paint those walls yourself comes down to time and money.
Time:
- Do you have enough time to devote to the preparation, the actual painting, and the cleanup?
- Do you have enough time to shop for the paint and the painting supplies needed to complete the task?
- Do you have the time to fix any problems that arise from mistakes that are made when you paint?
Money:
- Do you have the money to pay a professional?
- Do you have the money to buy all the supplies for painting - if you don't already have them - such as ladders, drop cloths, brushes, tape, etc.?
- Do you have the funds available to pay for any mistakes you make while painting it yourself?

Types of Paint for Your Chicago Home
What type of paint finish should you use on your interior walls? You have a few choices these days. Several factors apply to what type of paint you want to choose.
Paint Finish Types:
- Flat Paint - there is no sheen when the paint is dry. Light does not reflect off the paint.
- Eggshell Paint - a step up from flat. There is some sheen, but not very much.
- Satin Paint - much more sheen than eggshell finish paint. Very smooth surface.
- Semi- and High-Gloss Paint - extremely shiny, very reflective, and reflect the most light
The factors that apply are dependent on the uses of the room.
Flat Paint should be used in areas where the walls have a lot of imperfections. Any sheen can show the bumps and ridges in a wall. Also, flat paint is harder to clean (if at all) than ones with sheen, so it's not good for high-traffic areas.
Eggshell Paint is a good mix between flat and satin. It can be cleaned easier, but doesn't have as much sheen as satin so it can still hide some wall imperfections.
Satin is great for high-traffic areas, such as hallways and kids' rooms. It shows a lot of imperfections but can handle the most dirt and grime.
Semi- and High Gloss is best for kitchens and bathrooms. These paints can stand up to a high water area and repeated cleanings.
